Scholarships and Bursaries for Current International Students

In-course Scholarships for Current International Students

Details

In order to streamline and maximize the allocation of scholarships to current international students, starting in Winter 2025, undergraduate international students will be assessed for an in-course scholarship based on their prior year’s academic performance provided they have made a formal application in the Summer of each year.

Applications are required and the form will open every summer on the myTrent portal in June.

For students who were awarded an entrance scholarship, the in-course scholarship will be considered its annual renewal, while students who were not eligible for an entrance scholarship may become eligible for the in-course portion if their grades at Trent University meets the 80% eligibility criteria.

**Please note that 1st year students’ scholarship will be noted on their account statement as “TI Entrance Scholarship”, while scholarships for students in their upper years will be noted as “TI In-Course Scholarship”**

The in-course scholarship ranges from $1,500 to $3000 and will be assessed in late September based on the student’s term average in a full-time courseload in the preceding academic year.

Trent International Emergency Bursary

Description:

Trent International Emergency Bursary assists international undergraduate and post-graduate certificate students who experience unforeseen, short-term financial hardship. Online application is on-going while funding is available. Applications are reviewed on a weekly basis.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be an international student paying international fees for the current term
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate certificate program and in a full-time or an approved part-time courseload.
  • Please note: Graduate, Trent-ESL, exchange students, and international students paying domestic fees are not eligible for the Trent International Emergency Bursary.

Funding criteria:

While we would like to support as many students as possible, the Emergency Bursary is intended to assist undergraduate and post-graduate certificate international students with the greatest need. Preference will be given to students who are living in Canada for the current term.

Some examples of an emergency to be considered for Emergency Bursary are:

  • Accidents or injuries occurred to the student in Canada, who requires medical expenses beyond the limit of health insurance coverage
  • Forced displacement of current residence due to unexpected incident, such as fire in the apartment
  • Theft or loss of personal belongings that are essential for daily living or studies (e.g., laptop, ID, passport, study materials).

The Bursary is not intended to:

  • Address long-term, ongoing financial difficulty
  • Pay for tuition and school fees
  • Pay for textbook or other school-related necessities
  • Support a student’s family member who lost a job

Application process:

  • Submit an online form on myTrent->Finances->International->Emergency Bursary Request form.
  • Applications are reviewed weekly on Friday by a committee.
  • Applicants may be contacted for a confidential 1-on-1 discussion with an advisor. The discussion, however, does not guarantee approval for the bursary. It is intended for the advisor to understand the applicant’s situation and provides other services that are deemed appropriate.
  • Bursary is approved based on individual circumstances.
  • Only applicants who are approved for the bursary will be contacted on how to receive the fund.
